Before paying an electricity or television bill online
A few checks before confirming a bill payment can help prevent a payment being sent to the wrong account. Service screens differ between providers, so use the details and confirmation steps shown by the provider you are paying.
Check the service and account identifier
Choose the correct biller and service type. For electricity, confirm the distribution company and whether the meter is prepaid or postpaid. For television, confirm the provider and check whether the form asks for a decoder, smart-card or customer number. Copy the identifier carefully instead of relying on an old screenshot or a number remembered from a previous payment.
Review any account verification result
If the payment flow offers a customer-name or account check, compare the result with the intended recipient before proceeding. If the check fails, displays a different name or is unavailable, pause and confirm the identifier with the bill holder or the provider through its official channel. Do not assume that a payment can be reversed after a wrong account number is accepted.
Confirm the amount and keep the receipt
Review the amount, any displayed fees, the account number and the final confirmation screen. For prepaid electricity, follow the provider's instructions for retrieving and entering a token after payment. Keep the transaction reference and receipt until the bill has reflected or the token has been accepted.
If something does not look right
Do not submit a second payment while the first request is still pending. Check the transaction history and status first, then contact the platform or provider that processed the payment with the transaction reference. Never share a password, one-time code or transaction PIN while asking for help.
What to do when an airtime or data purchase is delayed
A digital purchase may remain pending while a payment or service provider confirms the request. A debit or a pending message alone does not always mean that the recipient has received the service. Use this checklist before trying again.
- Check the destination. Confirm the phone number, mobile network and selected plan against the receipt. If the number belongs to another person, confirm it with them directly.
- Check the status in the original service. Open the transaction history or order-status page for the platform used to make the purchase. Save the reference number and the time of the request.
- Avoid duplicate requests. If the first transaction still shows pending or processing, wait for its status to update or ask support to check it. Submitting the same purchase again can result in two completed orders.
- Use the correct support channel. Contact the platform that accepted the payment. Provide the transaction reference, destination number and plan, but do not send your password, transaction PIN or one-time verification code.
- Follow provider instructions. If the platform confirms completion but the service is not visible, check the mobile provider's official guidance or support. Keep the receipt until the issue is resolved.
Processing and resolution times depend on the service and its providers. Use the current status and official support response rather than assuming that every request completes immediately.
Simple ways to protect an online wallet
Wallet security depends on both the service and the choices people make with their devices and account details. These habits reduce common risks across payment apps and websites.
- Use a unique password for your account and a screen lock on your phone. Do not reuse a password from email or social media.
- Keep your password, transaction PIN and one-time verification codes private. A genuine support agent should not need you to disclose them in a chat or phone call.
- Open the service from a bookmark or by checking the website address yourself. Be cautious with links sent by unsolicited messages, especially links claiming that your account will be blocked unless you act immediately.
- Review the recipient, amount and transaction status before repeating a payment. Save transaction references for orders that need follow-up.
- Keep your phone, browser and apps updated. Avoid making payments on a shared device, and sign out when you finish using one.
- If you think your account is at risk, use the official website or app to reach support promptly. Do not reply to an unverified social account or give anyone remote access to your device.
These are general security practices and do not replace the account protections or instructions provided by your bank, mobile operator or payment service.
